Big Ben's Bongs are going to be missing for 4 years.

They have been off before, but only for relatively short periods. But 4
years! What will we do?

Why not use a loud loudspeaker system (located nearby) to play
recordings?

Alternative bells have been suggested - one favourite being the
Council House in Nottingham which sounds Westminster Chimes albeit as
I remember are a rather higher pitch!

Seems a b9it excessive. Are you telling me that they cannot actually arrange
something to make these sounds while they rebuild the clock?

If this was a goon show script, Bloodnock would have flogged them to the Eu
and replaced them with cardboard ones.

Yamaha make an excellent device that can make any sound out of other sounds
and I'd imagine a bloke sitting in whiteholl just typing the bongs would be
a good use of government money!

They could of course used a precisely timed recording?

A computer playing recordings would be just accurate as Big Ben (which
is kept pretty close to the pips).

Could they not borrow the sound system at one of the local mosques?

The BBC has/had a line from Big Ben to Broadcssting House. perhaps it could
be reversed and a BBC recording played out.

We'll find out in four years' time, when they try to play them, whether this
has actually been done ;-)
